PM leaves for UK, Sweden tomorrow
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will make a two-day official visit to Sweden on June 15-16 to further deepen and expand the cooperation between the two countries.
She will leave for Sweden en route to London tomorrow noon. Hasina is the first head of state or government who is making a bilateral visit to Sweden.
The Bangladesh leader was going to Sweden at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said at a curtain raiser press conference at the foreign ministry yesterday.
Hasina will lead a high-level delegation, comprising of the foreign minister and high officials from the Prime Ministers' Office, ministries of the foreign affairs, and the labour and employment. A 47-member business delegation will also accompany the PM.
Mahmood said the visit would strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation and bring investment and strengthen ties in the fields of migration, climate change, UN peacekeeping, Global Deal Initiative and curbing terrorism and violent extremism.
Official sources said the PM would have a private visit for one day in London for spending time with family members and her niece Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, who has been re-elected MP in the June 8 parliamentary elections in Britain.
She will fly for Sweden on Wednesday afternoon from London. Hasina will meet her Swedish counterpart at a bilateral meeting.
Besides, the PM will make a courtesy call on Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf. Apart from that, deputy prime minister, acting speaker and minister for justice and migration of Sweden will pay separate calls on Hasina.
Hasina will meet chief executives of some Swedish companies and top business institutions. She also will attend a meeting of Bangladesh-Sweden Business and Investment Forum.
This visit would also “brighten” Bangladesh's image in Europe, Mahmood said, adding that two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on Sweden-Bangladesh Business Council and the Nordic Chamber of Commerce and Industries were also expected to be signed.
